Hydro-therapy

Hydrotherapy at Healthsec Rehab

Hydrotherapy at Healthsec Rehab is delivered as part of a structured, clinically led rehabilitation programme. It is used selectively, where clinically indicated, to support functional recovery for clients within case-managed and complex rehabilitation pathways.

Our focus is on safe delivery, clear progression, and measurable outcomes, ensuring hydrotherapy is integrated appropriately alongside land-based physiotherapy and wider rehabilitation goals.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Clinical use and purpose

Hydrotherapy within a rehabilitation pathway

Hydrotherapy is not provided as a standalone service. At Healthsec Rehab, it is prescribed following assessment and used as one component of a broader rehabilitation plan.

The reduced load and controlled resistance of the aquatic environment can support early movement, strength development, and functional retraining where pain, reduced mobility, or injury limits land-based rehabilitation. Its use is regularly reviewed and adapted as the client progresses.

All hydrotherapy sessions are:

  • Clinically supervised
  • Goal-led and time-bound
  • Integrated with wider physiotherapy input
  • Progressed or withdrawn based on functional improvement

This ensures intervention remains proportionate, clinically appropriate, and aligned with the expectations of case-managed rehabilitation.

Unlike swimming, hydrotherapy uses tailored exercises in warm water (around 33–36°C) to support the body and relieve stress on the joints. The warmth and buoyancy of the water allow you to move more easily, helping to:

✅ Reduce pain and stiffness
✅ Improve joint mobility and circulation
✅ Strengthen muscles safely
✅ Support balance and confidence

Many people find hydrotherapy helps them move in ways they simply couldn’t on land, without fear of falling or overloading their joints.

Information for Case Managers

Hydrotherapy is considered following clinical assessment and is incorporated where it supports agreed functional goals within the rehabilitation plan. Delivery is supervised, time-limited, and reviewed regularly, with clear progression criteria and integration alongside land-based physiotherapy. Updates can be provided as required to support case management oversight and wider multidisciplinary working.

Who Can Benefit from Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is widely used for rehabilitation after injury, surgery, or illness, and for managing long-term conditions. It can be especially effective for:

Mobility challenges – including wheelchair users or those struggling with balance

Arthritis – easing stiffness, reducing pain, and improving daily function

Post-surgical rehab – particularly after joint replacements or orthopaedic surgery

Neurological conditions – such as stroke recovery or spinal cord injuries

Bariatric clients – water supports movement and makes exercise feel lighter and safer
